Today we worked on teamwork and problem solving by splitting into two groups and taking on the Marshmallow Challenge. In 18 minutes, each group can use 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of masking tape, one yard of string and one marshmallow to build the tallest free-standing structure with the entire marshmallow on the top. One team's structure stood about 2 feet, the other's was standing most of the way, but as they built it taller, they couldn't get it to stay upright and ran out of time. After the exercise, we talked about the value of using prototypes - the best results usually come from putting the marshmallow on top and working through different designs, which credit to both teams, they did that from the beginning. And then we talked about how they approached the problem solving throughout the exercise.
